Laser Gum Surgery Q & A

What is laser gum surgery?

Laser gum surgery gently and effectively clears away the bacteria that cause gum disease (periodontitis) without cutting away your gum tissue, which conventional gum surgery requires. Laser gum surgery is a minimally invasive, state-of-the-art alternative to traditional gum surgery for patients with severe gum disease. Dr. Nawlo, Dr. Shadid, and the team at Dental Spa of Broad Street use the FDA-cleared LANAP laser treatment.

As a certified LANAP protocol dentist, Dr. Nawlo is proud to offer this treatment to his patients with advanced stages of gum disease so you can enjoy the many benefits of healthier teeth and gums without the long recovery of traditional gum tissue surgery.

What can I expect during a laser gum surgery?

Dr. Nawlo and Dr. Shadid use the LANAP laser instead of a scalpel to gently and effectively treat your teeth and gums. The procedure typically takes two visits to the office to complete. In each two-hour visit, both Dr. Nawlo and Dr. Shadid use the laser to target bacteria in the pockets of your gums.

He treats one side of your mouth at a time, and typically you come in for treatment in two consecutive weeks. You can typically return to work or other daily activities right after your appointment.

During laser gum surgery, the laser fiber, which is only the width of three human hairs, sends energy to target the source of your gum inflammation and disease without removing or harming healthy gum tissue. This helps slow or even halt the process of your gums pulling away from your teeth when excessive tartar and plaque build-up.

What are the benefits of LANAP laser gum surgery?

There are wide-ranging advantages to the LANAP laser treatment when it comes to treating gum disease, including:

  • Faster healing
  • Less discomfort
  • Minimal recovery time
  • Reduced gum inflammation and bleeding
  • Saving your natural teeth
  • Less bleeding
  • Less gum swelling
  • Fewer postoperative infections
  • Less tooth sensitivity
  • Less gum loss

The LANAP procedure also promotes the regeneration of supporting gum tissue so you can enjoy a healthier mouth as you heal after laser gum surgery. If you have moderate to severe gum disease, you can benefit from the LANAP protocol as a way to improve your oral health and your overall health.
