Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Within the realm of cosmetic dentistry, veneers are custom-fit porcelain shells that adhere to the front side of your teeth. You can get a single veneer on one misshapen or cracked tooth, or you can get several veneers across your front teeth to improve the uniformity and brightness of your smile. Veneers are a cosmetic solution for a variety of common dental problems, including:

  • Stained teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Unevenly spaced teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Unevenly sized teeth

The skilled team at Dental Spa of Broad Street creates veneers to address many of your dental imperfections. For some adults, veneers can even be an alternative to braces. Veneers can give you a movie-star-quality smile with minimal dental work.

How do veneers adhere to my teeth?

Among cosmetic dentistry offerings, veneers are a relatively easy process. They’re minimally invasive and can improve your smile in just a couple of dental appointments.

At the first appointment, your dentist removes about half a millimeter of enamel from the teeth getting veneers, then makes impressions of your teeth using a state-of-the-art digital scanner. The amount of enamel that comes off of your teeth is equal to the wafer-thin size of the veneer, so it’s not much at all.

Next, the veneers are sent to a lab where they’re fabricated individually for your teeth, based on the impressions. When you come back to the office, your dentist thoroughly cleans your teeth, then uses a special tool to create a rough texture on the surface of each tooth that’s getting a veneer. This makes it easier for the veneer to adhere to each tooth.

With dental cement and an ultraviolet light, the veneers bond to your teeth securely and permanently.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers can last 10-15 years, as long as you take care of your teeth. Veneers are easy to care for, too. You can brush and floss like you normally would, and you should visit Dental Spa of Broad Street for routine professional dental cleanings every six months.

While veneers are strong and actually reinforce your teeth, they can chip or crack if you chew on ice or bite your nails. As long as you treat them as you would your natural teeth, veneers will enhance your smile for years to come.

If you’re ready to explore how veneers can improve your smile without having to undergo extensive dental work, call the office or request an appointment online to take the first step.
